SUMMARY:Artificialia

SUMMARY:Kunstfestival Damme

SUMMARY:Rhymes and Enantiomorphs
DESCRIPTION:‘Rhymes and Enantiomorphs’ is a collaboration between Denitsa Todorova and Stephan Balleux on pictorial deconstruction and reconstruction. \nThe complex\, ambiguous œuvre of Stephan Balleux reveals the artist’s obsession with the mechanisms involved in the power of the image. Through an expertly analytical approach\, Balleux turns the media environment to which we are all subjected daily into diverse artistic proposals\, all of which rely on one invariable act: assembling miscellaneous images from films\, press clippings\, magazines\, personal photographs\, etc. into an artistic corpus where the construction of images through painting is turned into an existential metaphor. Stephan Balleux lives and works in Brussels. \nThe drawings of Denitsa Todorova are made up of different layers\, like paintings. However\, while a painter may try to suppress one layer with the other\, Todorova aims to reveal by subtly removing parts of different graphite layers. The artist seems to sweep clean a painted window to let more and more light into the space of the viewer\, making her drawing an access point to sunlight. What Todorova effectively portrays is both abstract and emotional. Her drawings are inspired\, not by specific feelings\, but a subjective investigation into the meaning of concepts such as “endlessness” or metaphysical queries. \nFront page \n \nDenitsa Todorava Website

SUMMARY:Based On True Events
DESCRIPTION:At the invitation of Thierry de Valériola and Valerie Decroix\, an exceptional and prestigious Brussels house\, for sale and lent for the occasion as an exhibition space\, allowed me an unprecedented experience: to put in relation a set of works belonging to different periods.\nHeterogeneous in appearance\, time and form\, this exhibition brings together the most recent paintings never shown\, alongside photographs taken in my late teens\, childhood drawings\, texts written on a page\, ceramics\, overpaintings\, etc….\nEach room of this large residence waiting for an owner becomes an intimate entrance into one of the corners of my artistic journey.

SUMMARY:The Dust of the Meteors
DESCRIPTION:The title of the exhibition is borrowed from Alain Bashung’s album “l’Imprudence” which evokes with powerful poetry the feeling of impermanence. Using different types of mediums\, he composes a path of relationship between the different pieces with new\, recent works\, most of which were created for the LaVallée exhibition space. \nWhat is the relationship between a television set that is turned off\, a poster announcing the exhibition you are already circulating in\, a double self-portrait of the artist on the wall\, collections of found images irreverently diverted\, in situ murals and a set of heterogeneous monumental pictorial proposals? \nBy summoning a multitude of public personalities\, from politicians to philosophers to activists\, Stephan Balleux proposes a meditation on a possible value of existence.

SUMMARY:Oh you Pretty Things
DESCRIPTION:This new body of work collapses images and time\, speaking to concepts of existence and human nature\, desire\, fear\, and attraction. Through these allegories that are disguised in adult fairy tales\, Balleux attempts to produce a particular feeling created by the many layers and possible interpretations\, haunting the imagination.\nInspired by Belgian artist René Magritte\, and following in the footsteps of Casper David Frederich\, Balleux goes further into folktales\, myths\, magic\, and the semi-conscious. He has a fascination with the mythical\, the ghostly\, and the possibilities they exude for an artist\, challenging his imagination – especially in a post modern society.

SUMMARY:Sui generis
DESCRIPTION:Derived from Roman law\, sui generis is a term meaning “of its own kind”. It thus originally refers to a problem of legal taxonomy and is used to designate a case whose singularity is such that it cannot be classified in any of the categories already listed\, thus necessitating the creation of specific texts. \nInspired by images collected in encyclopedias at the beginning of the century\, in colonial exploration books\, in history or zoology books\, as well as on the Internet\, these watercolors thus deployed refer to a collection of images belonging to collective history. Through its encyclopedic vocation\, this “imaginary museum” immediately positions the artist as a curious and fervent collector of images. \nWe find in his work the fundamental principles on the image revealed by Magritte: isolation\, hybridization\, modification\, change of proportions\, chance encounters\, paradox\, double images\, the image and text couple\, etc. His attitude towards the image and his desire to use it as a vector of meaning or the destruction of meaning\, coupled with his experiences gleaned from the fields of digital art (where the image is a pure construction)\, puts him in a certain way in parallel with the surrealist movement. \n

SUMMARY:In Time
DESCRIPTION:CURATED BY TIM GOOSSENS \nSTEPHAN BALLEUX\, DIRK BRAECKMAN\, KOENRAAD DEDOBBELEER\, EDITH DEKYNDT\, PHILIP METTEN\, WILLEM OOREBEEK\, ELS OPSOMER\, FABRICE SAMYN\, PIETER VERMEERSCH \nThe title of the exhibition is derived from a song by the late Leo Ferré\, and the works included bear references to time: either in a formal time-based\, performative way or in direct reference to history\, nostalgia\, memory\, reproduction and a fading in time. Encompassing artists from both a newer generation and those that are internationally recognized\, the exhibition aims to give an overview of the Belgian contemporary art scene of today. This flourishing scene capitalizes on the country’s central location and its long history of artistic support to create a productive art center.
